Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are elastic vibrations propagating on a solid surface, which resemble seismic waves created during earthquakes. SAWs can be generated electrically using interdigital transducers on a piezoelectric substrate. This standard technique is widely used in signal processing, sensors, and acousto-optical modulation. Recently, there has been a growing interest to apply the dynamic strain and piezoelectric fields generated by SAWs to control and manipulate electronic effects in piezoelectric semiconductors.
This core research area aims at the investigation of SAWs for the control of semiconductor nanostructures by dynamically modulating the strain field. This leads to a time-dependent modulation of the bandstructure and, in case the material carrying the surface acoustic wave is piezoelectric, also to a timedependent electric field. Interestingly, this dynamic electric field has the wavelength of the acoustic wave - several orders of magnitude shorter than the wavelength of the corresponding electromagnetic field. The acoustic and acoustoelectric effects are furthermore investigated for novel device functionalities. Quite naturally the studies also include the development of piezoelectric materials compatible with semiconductors and efficient processes for the electrical excitation of SAWs.
