Understanding Crystal Growth by Molecular Beam Epitaxy

A new video simulation based on Monte-Carlo calculations by PDI senior scientist Dr. Vladimir Kaganer visualizes the main processes during crystal growth by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).

Dr. Kaganer, who is working at PDI on the theory and experimental analysis of x-ray diffraction in the Department of Microstructure, has been having the idea for an first version of the movie clip already some years ago. "I initially developed the simulation for scientific reasons. I wanted to understand our X-ray diffraction data during growth processes." But when he was looking for ways of presenting his work to visitors during the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften, he took out his calculations again. Inspired by the feedback during these public events, he also wanted to make his simulations accessible to a larger audience online. With the help of his former PhD student, Roman Shayduk, who worked on the 3D visualization, and PDI technician Gerd Paris, who contributed video and sound editing, the video could be brought into its final state.
