Since November 2012, the Science Facade of PDI offers curious passer-bys in Berlin-Mitte an emotional and direct access to our research. With the science façade, the institute wants to inspire curiosity for science and research through artistic perceptions of selected scientific topics. In a central location at Hausvogteiplatz, right next to Gendarmenmarkt and the famous Konzerthaus, topics of high technology are infused into the cultural environment of central Berlin.
The Science Facade was supported with funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMBF) and realized in cooperation with PFADFINDEREI, a Berlin based graphic agency. The installation consists of five shop windows (3x5m each) at the outer façade of the institute on Taubenstrasse, which are equipped with a projection system in order to screen visual content.
At the moment, a compilation of six short animations is streamed every evening. The clips play with the beauty of raw scientific data and are of outstanding visual impact and quality. Rather than offering explanations in the clips themselves, the viewer can access further information with his smartphone through QR-codes that become visible during the film.
The video and sound works have been also adapted for web format and are available on an own website.
