Control of Elementary Excitations by Acoustic Fields

Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) are elastic vibrations propagating on a solid surface, which resemble seismic waves created during earthquakes. SAWs can be generated electrically using interdigital transducers on a piezoelectric substrate. This standard technique is widely used in signal processing, sensors, and acousto-optical modulation. Recently, there has been a growing interest to apply the dynamic strain and piezoelectric fields generated by SAWs to control and manipulate electronic effects in piezoelectric semiconductors.

This core research area aims at the investigation of SAWs for the control of semiconductor nanostructures by dynamically modulating the strain field. This leads to a time-dependent modulation of the bandstructure and, in case the material carrying the surface acoustic wave is piezoelectric, also to a timedependent electric field. Interestingly, this dynamic electric field has the wavelength of the acoustic wave - several orders of magnitude shorter than the wavelength of the corresponding electromagnetic field. The acoustic and acoustoelectric effects are furthermore investigated for novel device functionalities. Quite naturally the studies also include the development of piezoelectric materials compatible with semiconductors and efficient processes for the electrical excitation of SAWs. Our recent areas of interest include:

  • Long spin lifetimes in (111) GaAs quantum wells (QWs): The transport of spins using the piezoelectric field of a SAW requires long spin lifetimes in order to reach large transport distances under a relatively low SAW propagation velocity. The efforts of the previous years have concentrated on the development of GaAs QWs grown along the [110] and [111] directions, where the crystallographic symmetry reduces the impact of spin dephasing due to spin-orbit (SO) effects on the spin lifetime.
  • Acoustic exciton control: We take advantage of the dynamic band gap modulations introduced by the SAW strain field. In order to avoid piezoelectric fields, which can easily dissociate excitons, experiments are carried out using non-piezoelectric SAW modes. These modes are generated by acoustic transducers placed on an island of piezoelectric material deposited on the surface of the sample. The activities on acoustic exciton control include the modulation of exciton-polariton condensates as well as the transport and manipulation of indirect excitons. We have previously demonstrated that the band gap modulation produced by a SAW can trap and transport indirect excitons.
  • Carrier control in semiconductor nanowires: Semiconductor nanowires offer new functionalities for many applications due to their quasi one-dimensional shape and nanometric size. The use of acoustic excitations in these kind of structures opens the way to high frequency carrier manipulation and acoustically induced single photon sources.
  • Acoustic control of carriers and spins in graphene layers: The planar character and high carrier mobility of graphene makes it an important material for electronic applications. In our studies, we investigate the interaction of the dynamic strain and piezoelectric fields of SAWs with the graphene band structure for the controlled acoustic transport and manipulation of carriers and spins in graphene grown on SiC.
