Dynamic photon control using acoustic fields

EU-ePIXnet network Photonic switches and modulators based on surface acoustic waves.

Funding agency, European Union, Framework 6

Duration: 1.9.2005 - 28.2.2009

EPIXNET is a European Network of Excellence dedicated to the integration of photonic components. Within the network, the PDI coordinates the joint research activity (JRA) “Photonic switches and modulators based on surface acoustic waves”, which is aimed at investigation of efficient light switches and modulators based on surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The work will include the exploration of novel processes to control light in waveguide structures using acoustic beams as well as the development of materials and technology to fabricate devices for operation in the spectral range for fiber-based optical communication (1.3-1.55 mm). The JRA partners are the University of Eindhoven (NL), the Technical University of Denmark (DK), and the University of Twente (NL). The activities in the present phase of the network include (i) the generation of high-frequency, high-power acoustic beams compatible with waveguide modulation; (ii) study of concepts for in-plane acousto-optical devices. Considering the last point, we will follow two approaches: the use of acoustic transport for controlling light beams (1300-1550 nm range) as well as the direct modulation of waveguides and photonic structures by acoustic fields. The investigated concepts include very compact acoustically driven multiple Mach-Zehnder interferometersframework6 (MZI). Besides the wide wavelength range, a main advantage of the acousto-optic modulation is the versatility, which will be explored by fabricating GaAs, InP, and silicon based structures. www.epixnet.org
