AiR Diary #1
December 16th, 2024
Mary's first diary entry. Observations on her first tour of the Molecular Beam Epitaxy lab with PhD Student Moritz Hansemann, and a lecture on the fundamentals of spectroscopy by Markus Wagner, Head of Department Semiconductor Spectroscopy.
Me: Why grow crystals?
Moritz Hansemann: to see what is possible.
Exitaxy Lab; favourite image. Moritz imaging acrobats climbing/operating/covering an MBE system as it requires long arms and physical contortions to operate :)
Markus Wagner’s lecture: Can we crack Nature’s code?
Beam splitter!
Photoluminescence
Piezo (pressure / push)
Transmission, Reflection, Refraction, Scattering } Interesting Theatrically
Exciton : impurity binding energies
SAW Surface Acoustic Waves
SPECTROSCOPY: the study of the absorption and emission of light and other radiation by matter
Photon (in simple terms) the smallest possible particles of electromagnetic energy. Therefore also the smallest possible particles of light.
