PDI invites Berlin artists to explore science from the inside

/ Announcements

Berlin, March 30, 2026 – The Paul-Drude-Institut für Festkörperelektronik (PDI) in Berlin is opening applications for its Artist-in-Residence Program, offering Berlin-based artists a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in cutting-edge materials science research.

The PDI Artist-in-Residence Program brings together artists and scientists to explore the boundaries between creative practice and scientific inquiry. Located in the heart of Berlin, PDI is one of the world's leading institutes in the fabrication and analysis of nanomaterials for semiconductor technology. PDI's in-house facilities provide over 1,500 m² of laboratory space, including 11 molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) systems and a central clean room area of 450 m² dedicated to state-of-the-art processing and nanofabrication.

"Our Artist-in-Residence Program has shown us just how much scientists and artists have to offer one another," said Prof. Dr. Roman Engel-Herbert, Director of PDI. "We are excited to open this opportunity again and welcome a new creative voice into our community."

The program is open to Berlin-based artists working in any discipline. Each residency lasts three months, beginning any time after July 1st, 2026, during which artists will have access to PDI's labs, a dedicated office space, and mentorship from scientists and technicians. At the close of the residency, the artist will present their processes and learnings in a public discussion and showcase their work in a format appropriate to their medium. Artists receive a stipend of EUR 1,500 per month.

"The exchange between artistic and scientific thinking challenges us to see our own work differently," said Dr. Carsten Hucho, Head of Department Technology and Transfer at PDI. "We look forward to welcoming an artist who is curious, open, and ready to engage deeply with what we do here."

The call for applications opens on March 30 and closes on May 30, 2026.
