Science Punk

What is Science Punk?

What is Science Punk?

Science Punk challenges traditional boundaries and explores the unorthodox side of scientific inquiry. It is a place where pursuing knowledge embraces rule-breaking, creativity, and rebellious thinking—because sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs happen when you defy conventions.

Scientists are often bound by rules, protocols, and expectations—but what if they weren't? We asked researchers: “What one experiment would you conduct if you had unlimited resources?”

Their responses are captured in a series of short films, showcasing the intersection of punk attitude and scientific discovery. These films dive deep into uncharted ideas and daring innovations—highlighting how creativity drives science forward, and unites us on common ground.

The Science Punk events were produced for Berlin Science Week 2024 to align with this year's theme, Common Ground. Science Punk is hosted by PDI in collaboration with their partners from the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.

Meet the Science Punks

The Science Punk videos were conceived by scientists from two institutes of Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.: PDI and Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ).

Berlin Science Week 2024

Berlin Science Week is the biggest annual science event in Berlin, transforming the city into a vibrant festival of scientific ideas, exploration and experimentation every year. This year’s theme is COMMON GROUND. Berlin Science Week runs from 1-10 November and features over 300 events across two festival hubs, as well as in various partner venues throughout the city and online. PDI is proud to partner with BSW in 2024 for the 6th consecutive year.

The Science Punk videos will be screened in the Tiny Galleries in the Science & Culture FORUM at Holzmarkt 25. Scientists from PDI will be there in person to discuss their videos and their work at the institute, and answer questions from the scientifically-curious public.
