An encounter with science

Live experiments in underground stations - a collaboration with the Greek science communication organization SciCo during Berlin Science Week 2019

The Paul-Drude-Institut (PDI) is once again bringing Mind The Lab - a confrontation with living science - to Berlin's U Bahn stations.

PDI first caused a stir with this event at Berlin Science Week in 2018. Developed by the Greek educational non-profit group, SciCo-Science Communication, the event was held for the first time in the Athens Metro and attracted more than 10,000 people. Similar events then took place in Madrid and Edinburgh. As its popularity grows, more international cities are showing interest in this campaign.

This year, for the second Long Night of the Sciences, Berliners will be directly confronted with scientific experiments and presentations at five underground stations. On November 7th, 2019, researchers from well-known research institutions such as the Freie Universität Berlin, Leibniz Association, Helmholtz Association, and the Max Planck Society will give presentations in the subway stations Alexanderplatz, Friedrichstrasse, Stadtmitte, Möckernbrücke and Rathaus Steglitz from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The presentations will encourage discovery and participation into the exciting insights into their scientific research. The PDI itself will surprise travelers at the Alexanderplatz underground station with an insight into the world of nanotechnology.

Knowledge transfer

As an institute of the Leibniz Association, the PDI conducts socially-relevant research on new materials. The emphasis on social relevance also means that the research results are prepared in such a way that they can be used by society. It is therefore very important to the PDI to get the public interested in research, but also in the scientific principle itself. Their approach generates adventure of science. Mind The Lab is one such adventure.
