HyperSpy receives Open Science Award 2025

We are pleased to share that HyperSpy, the open-source Python package for multidimensional data analysis, has been awarded the Open Science Award for Open Source Research Software 2025 in the category “Coup de cœur du jury” (Jury’s Favourite). The award was presented by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation on December 1 in Paris during the annual conference on scientific data (ANDOR 2025).
Initially released in 2011, HyperSpy has seen strong involvement from the ZALKAL application laboratory team at PDI, led by Senior Scientist Jonas Lähnemann, who has been contributing to HyperSpy since 2018 and is now one of its core developers. In 2020, he co-launched LumiSpy, a dedicated extension for luminescence spectroscopy data, together with colleagues from the University of Cambridge.
“HyperSpy is the basis for all our cathodoluminescence data analysis at PDI, and it is now also used for time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy data. Being part of such a community-driven, open-source project is extremely valuable for reproducible and transparent research,” says Jonas Lähnemann.
Beyond software development, PDI researchers are actively engaged in training and community building around HyperSpy. Jonas Lähnemann is organizing a HyperSpy tutorial session at the upcoming DPG Spring Meeting in Dresden that involves presentations from PDI contributors and other colleagues. The agenda and more information will be available on the conference website from January 30, 2026.
