Expertise

While pursuing his PhD at PDI, Patrick discovered and kinetically modeled new catalytic and suboxide-mediated growth mechanisms for functional oxide thin films. In 2018, Humboldt University awarded him the Lise Meitner Prize for his PhD work. He pioneered the use of metal-exchange catalysis to create stable and metastable oxide polymorphs. He also pioneered the suboxide molecular-beam epitaxy (S-MBE) technique, which enables the adsorption-controlled growth of group III and group IV oxides at record-high MBE growth rates and record-low growth temperatures (back-end-of-line compatible). 

After gaining extensive expertise in thermal laser epitaxy (TLE)—an emerging thin film growth technology—he returned to PDI to establish a dedicated TLE laboratory (ATLAS) and introduce TLE as a new area of expertise at PDI.
