Order and Disorder at Berlin Science Week 2023

/ Announcements , Events

At PDI we're committed to sharing our knowledge and expertise inside and outside the lab. Because of this commitment, we've become recognized in Berlin for our outreach activities. Over the years, we've brought science to the city in many unexpected formats, including the art-science festival STATE Experience Science, our artist-in-residence Sadie Weiss, and taking science underground in Mind The Lab

This year, in our fifth partnership with Berlin Science Week, we are bringing science to the streets in two new ways:

On Order And Disorder

What: Visual projection on PDI's Science Facade
Date: 1- 10 November 2023, from nightfall until late
Location: Hausvogteiplatz/Taubenstr (U Hausvogteiplatz), 10117 Berlin

We invited Berlin artist Roland Boden to our Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Microstructure labs to research order and disorder in physics. Trained as an engineer before pursuing visual art, Boden's artistic method combines scientific facts with fictional hypotheses, creating plausible results that leave us questioning our perspectives. His research resulted in On Order And Disorder, an animated visual artwork that relaunched the PDI Science Facade and kicked off Berlin Science Week 2023. The Science Facade is a 15-meter-long virtual window into our nanotechnology institute, situated on the corner of Hausvogteiplatz and Taubenstrasse. Installed in 2012 with support from the German Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMBF), the Science Facade engages passersby nightly in Berlin's Mitte district and inspires curious minds to think differently about science.

From Order to Disorder and Back — Featuring Icarus Performance

What: Performance, exhibition, presentations, and panel discussion
Date: 9th November 2023, 18:00 - 23:00
Location: ART-SCIENCE FORUM at Holzmarkt, Holzmarktstraße 25, 10243 Berlin

With the support of Shuttle program from Ágora – Cultura e Desporto do Porto, E.M., S.A.

Co-curated by researcher and sound artist Francisca Rocha Gonçalves, From Order to Disorder and Back is an evening of discussion and consideration of themes across borders. Through performance art, exhibitions, demonstrations, and debate, a group of interdisciplinary experts will interpret phase transitions in mind, matter, and society, each bringing a unique perspective to this universal theme.
